This guide walks you through configuring the “Stores” and “Tax Settings” sections on the Lappa platform.
Step 1: Complete your company profile
Before anything else, make sure your company profile is fully filled in. This is the foundation for all subsequent settings and ensures your account is configured correctly from the start.
Step 2: Set up your store integrations
Go to the “Stores” section and connect your sales channels. If your store is fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) or managed directly by the merchant, warehouse address data will be populated automatically based on the platform’s default settings — no manual entry required.
Step 3: Configure Tax Settings — VAT
Open “Tax Settings” and add your VAT registration details.
Key points to note:
- VAT numbers must be entered in the VIES-compliant format;
- select the correct reason for VAT registration — this affects how your returns are calculated and filed;
- enter your actual VAT registration date;
- the “Valid till” field is only relevant if you are planning to deregister your VAT certificate — leave it blank otherwise.
Step 4: Configure Tax Settings — Sales Tax
The Sales Tax subsection applies exclusively to businesses selling in the US market.
- Add all active Sales Tax permits for the states where you are registered;
- the Sales Tax Returns section will only become visible once at least one permit has been added;
- for states where permits are already added, Lappa will automatically track your nexus status.
To monitor economic nexus across all US states — including those where you are not yet registered — click “Calculate threshold for economic nexus for all states”. Your dashboard will then display which states you are approaching or have exceeded the nexus threshold in.
Step 5: Exemptions
The “Exemptions” section is particularly important if your business uses the API provided by Lappa. Make sure this is configured correctly to ensure accurate tax calculations across your integrated systems.
